Dear all,

I encountered a weird phenomenan that the vmware workstation 12 occasionally black screened when I reboot.

Sometimes it is not blacked screen, sometimes it is. I have to reboot many times to have a non black screen....

I install the vmware workstation 12 on a win 10 machine (host), and it boots the Ubuntu 16.04 for my research.

I uncheck the accelerate 3D graphics as some people recommended but it is not helpful for the situation.

The vmware log files says in the attachment.

Windows Sandbox and VMware

Hi.

In earlier version of Windows 10 and VMware Workstation Player, I wasn´t able to use the Windows Sandbox and VMware Workstation Player. If I enable the Sandbox, Vmware doesn´t run giving an error. Disabling the Sandbox, VMware works fine.

Now I´m running Windows 10 20H1 or v2004 with latest updates, and also VMware Workstation Player 15.5.6.

Is it now possible to use both, or still not?

Thanks

I have a host windows 10 running vmware workstation player 15.5.6 and an ubuntu guest

I wanted to install apache openmeeting to be able to host some presentation

when lookig at many entries on inernet I always see :

  1. Click Edit> Virtual Network Editor.
  2. Select VMnet8 and click NAT settings.
  3. Enter the Gateway IP and click Add.

these options are not present on my player : I can edit vm settings and select network adapter nat

on the right panel I only see nat : nat used to share the host's ip

there is a button advanced - but does not apply to this..

is there an equivalent method to accomplish the same

I want to run a server in my guest and I want external users on the internet have the possibility to connect to this server

Thanks for all update/help

best regards, Guy

VMWare won't recognize keyboard's wireless receiver

I have a new Logitech G613 keyboard. Logitech offers a tool to update the keyboard's firmware and one to program the programmable keys which, of course, are Windows programs. I am using OpenSuse 15.1 as my main operating system, so I installed the Logitech apps in a VMWare Player 15.5.6 virtual Windows 10 machine. The program installs and runs fine, however, it looks for a USB wireless keyboard and cannot find it. I receive the message, "There is no wireless receiver plugged into your device."  I don't know, but I imagine the keyboard is being passed to the virtual machine as some kind of virtual device, while its identity is held by OpenSuse so that it can work in both the virtual machine and Linux. Is there a way to make the virtual machine recognize the keyboard as a native device so that the update program can access it?

Workstation Player 15.5.6

Hello.

Problems began to arise with the Workstation player, starting with version 15.5.0 - the Player shell periodically stopped running.

updated, rebooted and the player itself is visible in the processes and consumes about 25% of the CPU and there is no more reaction on the screen. Uninstalling and reinstalling gives nothing. Tried to erase C: \ programdata \ vmware. I tried to rename the container folders with the machines. Tried to roll back updates.

Any ideas?

My windows 10 VMWare Workstation 15 keeps killing my Node Server

Hi, I'm using VMWare Workstation 15 Player free version with windows 10.

I am trying to run a Node app with windows 10 but for some reason is killing it without telling me what is going on.

I am basically going to visual studio code, opening the command line console, then node server run. Everything is fine, then suddenly things stops working, I go back and there is no crash warning or anything, the OS is almost the same way as you would have rebooted, so node is not running and visual studio is not opened.
I'm not sure if it's a windows update, it's occurring more frequently now. I a,m trying to block that update at all costs, but is there a way to debug this?

Failed to start Ubuntu installed on a portable disk

Hi guys,

I have installed VM ware 15 (free version) and Ubuntu 18.04 on a potable disk, I ran Ubuntu by plugging the portable disk into my PC and running it from the portable disk. Someday I reset the Win 10 of my PC, after resetting I found something went wrong: when I tried to launch Ubuntu from the portable disk. VM ware complained: Error while powering on: Unable to find the VMX binary

Since I installed the Ubuntu on my portable disk, I think the resetting of PC's Win 10 didn't affect Ubuntu, all vmdk files are there on my portable disk, also the .vmx file is still in the folder where I installed Ubuntu. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Thank you in advance!

Having trouble starting VMware due to modules VMnet, and VMmon having trouble installing.

Info about my setup:

Kali V5.4.0, 8GB RAM, ZOTAC Graphics Card

Hello! So, I have been trying to install VMware Player on my Machine, but have been hit with one problem after another threw the whole installation process.

When ever I start VMware Player, it tells me it first needs to install some modules(VMnet, and VMmon) need to be installed first

Screenshot from 2020-02-28 09-53-50.png

That's all fine, but then it says it had trouble installing the modules and exits, and says to check the logs

Screenshot from 2020-02-28 09-54-00.png

first 100 lines of Log  /tmp/vmware-root/vmware-30354.log

VMware logs - Pastebin.com

So, I decided to try and install the modules from the command line directly, but got the same error with more info about it:

[Make] VMware error - Pastebin.com

It seems to me that the VMware code in the file /vmnet-only/userif.c

has multiple errors so it can't compile, but I'm not too sure what to do about it.

Any help would be appreciated! - Thanks

P.S Just so you guys know, I've already uninstalled, and reinstalled VMware Player, but it didn't fix the problem.

Connect to a Guest "KeyServer" program

$

Hello,

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 as host with VM Workstation Player 15.5.2build-1578246 housing WindowsXP as a guest. The WinXP is running a "keyserver" program for a piece of software that needs to connect to the "keyserver" program and then start as a licensed copy.  I am using a BRIDGED network connection.

I can see the WinXP, and I can connect to it (using RDP protocol). I can see the keyserver program running using nmap from a remote Ubuntu client.  When I try to connect to the "keyserver" program from a Windows7 or Win10 via the IP address for the [Ubuntu host/WinXP guest], I get an error stating that the program cannot find the "keyserver" program and there is a connection error.

So, basically I moved the WinXP install from a 15 year old desktop into a VMWare environment so that I could continue to use the software, and wanted to essentially have the Ubuntu host be completely transparent and have the guest behave as if it is/was still a physical machine.

  What am I doing incorrectly?

TIA

VMWare Player - Bridged Network Issue

$

Hello,

Details:

I have VMWare Player 15.5.6 running on Windows 10 - 1909, VM Guest is Windows 7 - 64bit Pro.

I have 3 VM Networks assigned:

VMNet0 Bridged to my Wired Ethernet

VMNet1 Bridged to my Wireless Ethernet

VMNet8 the Default NAT.

Windows 10 recently updated itself to 1909. And shortly thereafter I updated Player to 15.5.6

When I run the VM Guest, I can no longer get an IP assigned to the Wireless (VMNet1) device via DHCP. I can manually assign an IP to my network on the Wireless and it will work. If I connect a Wired cable to my router, the Wired and Wireless connections will both obtain an IP via DHCP.

I have tried Stop/Start of VMNetBridge, I have tried resetting to defaults under VMNetCfg. I have tried removing all the Networks, and removing the traces under the VMX file. I have removed all my VPN services. I have uninstalled and re-installed Player 15.5.6

I'm running out of things to try.

I have not tried downgrading Player yet.

Would the community have any other suggestions ?

Thanks.

Workstation 14 Player - The destination file system does not support large files

$

Vmware Workstation 14 Player :- we were hoping to locate a Windows 10 Virtual Machine on a USB SSD disk drive, connected to a Windows 10 laptop.

On attempting to create the virtual machine on the USB disk drive, a refusal message is received :- “The destination file system does not support large files”. The USB disk drive has over 400GB of free space on it.

If the Virtual Machine is instead created on the laptop’s own hard disk and then copied over to the USB disk drive, it subsequently seems to then work fine located on the USB disk drive.

However does anyone have any ideas why you can’t create the VM on the USB disk drive? Note the USB Disk Drive does have a UDF file system. It may be that Workstation misbehaves with UDF file systems, although could'nt find anything to that effect thru Google.

Webcam and Bluetooth USB passthrough problems

I'm running Workstation Player 15.5.6 (paid license) on a Windows 10 Pro 2004 host with Windows 10 2004 Pro guest. The USB controller on the guest is in USB 3.1 mode. I've tested these devices plugged in to USB 2.0 ports and USB 3.1 Gen1 ports. I'm having two problems related to USB passthrough:

  1. Logitech C930e webcam passed through to guest sometimes exhibits choppy video and/or audio in Microsoft Teams and also in the Camera application when previewing (but not when recording video). Not yet tested on the host but I doubt it's a problem with the camera. When the audio goes bad, the party on the other end reports that I sound "robotic". I've also been able to reproduce this when using the Teams Echo test call. It sounds like I'm talking through a fan only much worse. I can't see the video from the other end, but some people have said it's about 5 frames per second. It also seems like when the video gets choppy the audio gets choppy at the same time. This is a high-quality enterprise webcam so I don't think the hardware is at fault.
  2. USB Bluetooth adapter passed through to the guest doesn't work properly with headset. The microphone works, but there's no audio other than an occasional blip or squawk from the earphone. This same hardware setup has been tested and confirmed fully working on the host. I understand that "share Bluetooth devices" unfortunately doesn't support headsets, but I'm passing the whole Bluetooth adapter through to the guest so I think this should work.

Support for these hardware passthrough scenarios was the reason I paid for VMware instead of using an open-source solution, but it seems that VMware has let me down. Are there any confirmed fixes for this type of problem? Please note that I've already tried all obvious things like reinstalling drivers, reseating USB cables, etc.

Every VM black screen on startup - found a hacky fix, but why does not work properly?

$

Every VM I start has a black screen. I'm pretty sure it's loading, as the screen size changes, and it usually makes sounds, can ping, etc. But black screen, so no use.

Linux and Windows VMs. Latest VMware Workstation Player on latest Windows 10. Tried reinstalling VMware, reinstalling VMs, restarting computer, 3D acceleration on/off.

The only way to make it work is to boot the machine, force close it with Task Manager, then re-start it. This was it goes into the "safe" boot mode (i.e "Last Known Good Configuration screen"), and always works - or sometimes it boots straight to the login screen (visibly so).

Log attached. Closed at late min 34, re-opened VMware at early min 35.

Why is this happening?

Cannot use VMWare 15.5 with Windows 10 OS Build 17783

Hello all,

I just had my corporate laptop upgraded, but I cannot get any VMs to work. I can't seem to disable Windows HyperVisor even though I've tried the bcdedit command. Has anyone been able to get VMWare WorkStation to install correctly without upgrading to the latest 20H1 of Windows 10?

Thank you!

migrate from free ESXi to free/personal Workstation Player?

$

Several years ago I took my Win10 desktop computer (with 24 GB) and reinstalled it with the free version of ESXi 6.0. Since then I have maxed-out the disks and it is not clear how to fix that on ESXi -- so I am looking for an easier setup. Currently, I am hosting just 2 VMs: a Windows file-share, and a Windows Plex server. (In the past I also had an Ubuntu VM hosting a VPN but it crashed, and I rarely used it.)

Now I am thinking of restoring this machine to Win10 and moving my VMs to the free/personal version of VMware Workstation Player. Is this a good idea?

More specifically:

  • does Workstation Player allow more than 1 running VM?
From my research it seems that it certainly did in the past but the current version is shown on VMware's comparison table as NO for "Run multiple VMs at once"
    VMware Workstation 15.5 Player
Instead, it seems they want you to buy Workstation Pro for $250
  • can I move my Windows VMs from ESXi to Workstation Player?
My research seems to indicate that I can, e.g. use 'Export to OVF' function in ESXi, then re-import in Workstation Player.
  • can I move my Windows VMs from ESXi to either VirtualBox or Hyper-V?
If the only way to multiple VMs is through Workstation Pro, I don't think that's worth $250 to me. I would rather spend that money on Windows Server, or if possible just use VirtualBox for free.

Thank you for any suggestions!
