DVD drive on windows 10 host won't eject after using 'Use physical drive' option on windows 98se guest - unless i eject from Explorer in the guest

hi, i've been having issues with my physical dvd drive on my windows 10 laptop after using the 'Use physical drive' option on a windows 98se guest.

basically, i can't eject a dvd from either the button on the drive or the host explorer - it will only eject if i right click on the drive in 98se and click eject from there. it only seems to happen as soon as i switch from using an ISO to using the physical drive. i can only solve the issue by rebooting the host. what could be happening, and what should i do? i'm using workstation player 15.

This has been a VM I have been using for a long time.  It is Windows XP.  I was using VMWare workstation player 15.0 and upgraded to 15.5.6 and then it started having problems.  I hope someone can see something in the log that I can fix.  Thanks in advance. _Joe_

Unity Mode: Ctrl+Shift+U doesn't work

I'm running a Win7 Pro 64-bit host, with a Win7 Pro 32-bit guest. I have a 3-monitor setup, with the desktop extended to all 3 screens. I'm having the following issues using Unity mode:

  • Pressing Ctrl+Shift+U, which is supposed to be used to launch new programs in the guest, doesnothing.
  • Pointing to the host Start button sometimes brings up a guest VM icon that can be pressed to get the guest Start menu (or something like it), but only once in a while.
  • The guest randomly exits Unity mode without any action on my part, and, when I reactivate it, I have to resize/rearrange the open programs to the way they were before I was kicked out of Unity mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bluetooth issues on WIN10 Host with Ubuntu 20 client.

L.S,

I run Ubuntu 20 LTS in a vm using player 15.5.5 build-16285975 on WIN10 1909 build 18363.900 host

I am trying to detect if a Bluetooth device is active or not using the bluez Unix package

The device is a remote shutter, detected by WIN10 and Ubuntu as a keyboard.

python code

=======

import bluetooth

_shuttermac = '11:22:33:44:5D:6A'

result = bluetooth.lookup_name(_shuttermac, timeout=0.4)

print(result)

=======

this results in the device ALWAYS being found, even if not connected (power off), this is not correct, IMHO.

i suspect this to be an issue with the VM Player.

i tried the same code on a non-virtual Unix machine (RPi with debian 10) and there it works as expected, result=None when device is off, result=device name when device is on.

WIN10 lists the device as paired when off, connected when on.Which is what i expect

the Ubuntu VM client sees this device as always on.

hcitool scan also ALWAYS finds the device on the VM.

on the RPI hcitool only reports the device when actually on

on ubuntu

WIN10 reports -> AB shutter3 - Paired

==== device off

ob@VM-Dom:~$ hcitool scan

Scanning ...

11:22:33:44:5D:6A AB Shutter3

WIN10 reports -> AB shutter3 - Connected

==== device on

rob@VM-Dom:~$ hcitool scan

Scanning ...

11:22:33:44:5D:6A AB Shutter3

on rpi

==== device off

pi@RPi-Rob-usb:~/socktest/detectABshutter3 $ hcitool scan

Scanning ...

00:1A:7D:DA:71:10 HP-DESKTOP

==== device on

pi@RPi-Rob-usb:~/socktest/detectABshutter3 $ hcitool scan

Scanning ...

11:22:33:44:5D:6A AB Shutter3

00:1A:7D:DA:71:10 HP-DESKTOP

i already searched the forums, and removed all usb.autoConnect.devicex entries.

No improvement.

Any suggestions will be very welcome

VMWare Workstation 14 Player not starting

$

Hello,

I'm trying to get GNS 3 installed, and I've run into a really frustrating issue.  Initially, I had installed VMWare Workstation 15 player, and then after realizing that this was incompatible with GNS3, I installed 14.

Now, upon installing 14 it doesn't start.  I don't get an error message, I don't get a warning, it doesn't start up and then crash...quite literally nothing happens except for a millisecond where it "thinks

I've also tried to install previous versions, like 12.5 with similar results

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, rebooting, forced uninstalls, VMWare "cleanup" tool, and nothing works.  .

However, if I install 15?  Works just fine

Quite frankly, I'm at my wits end, here.  Is it possible that something with 15 is just not getting uninstalled or cleaned up, and it's causing the older versions to fail?  The most frustrating thing about this is that there are no error messages or anything to go off of.  My search for "VMWare player won't start" is really freaking generic and doesn't find me anything to do with my particular issue.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated

The operation on file \\.\PhysicalDrive1 failed

I'm running VMware Workstation Player 15 on a Win7 host. I'm trying to use an Ubuntu 16.04LTS client to do partitioning, cloning, and other related things on disks. I was able to create a bunch of partitions on a blank SSD, and they're visible both in Windows Disk Management, and under Linux in the /dev tree. When I try to use the dd command to try to copy an existing partition on an old drive over the empty partition on the new drive, which has the same size, I can't write to it at all, because I get popups from the VM with the message mentioned in the title. Neither drive is mounted in Linux. I've tried it with the drives online and offline in Windows, and it makes no difference.

I can do this stuff by just booting direct to Linux (meaning there's nothing wrong with the disks), but I need to go back and forth between Linux and Windows tools, and repeatedly rebooting makes my work really difficult.

So what does this error message mean, what causes it, and what do I do about it?

VMware Player: You Aren't Connected to Any Networks

I am running a Windows 10 virtual machine (VMDK) on a Win10 host laptop in VMware Player. The host is connected to the Internet via WiFi. The VM's Network Status (Win-I > Network & Internet) says, "You aren't connected to any networks."

Based on experience using the same configuration on a desktop machine, I assume I could tell the VM (via Player > Removable Devices) to use a separate USB WiFi adapter, and then both host and guest could be online. But to reduce appendages on the laptop, I would prefer to persuade the VM to use the host's internal WiFi adapter.

When I take the host offline (via Win-I > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Off), the guest still sees no available networks, using either NAT or Bridged. So I'm not sure how to make WiFi available even if host and guest aren't competing for the same adapter. The ideal would be to allow both host and guest to be online simultaneously, but I have no idea how to achieve that without a separate adapter.

Trouble Installing Windows 10 Virtual Drive

I am able to install VMware Workstation 15 (non commercial use) with no problem but then cannot get Win 10 to install.  I have a USB drive with several files on it but then I added Windows.iso to that USB drive.  I have tried installing Win 10 concurrent with creating the virtual drive and also tried installing after virtual drive was created but it just seems that the install process never really starts.  I previously had the virtual drive along with Win 10 installed on this same PC but then I reset the PC so everything was erased.

Don't know if it is normal but when I tell VMware to use Windows.iso it says it cannot determine the OS so I need to tell it Win 10 64 bit

Please help me with some suggestions.

VMWare Player - is this considered "Commercial Use"?

I work for a large company (>1000 employees).  I have VMWare Player installed on my laptop.  I use it as a "sandbox" for evaluating software, testing various software configurations before using in a production environment, and MS SQL development.  I'm the only one using this instance of VM Player, and it does not host any remote connections.  Is this situation considered "Commercial Use" by VMWare's definition?  Any feedback is appreciated. If this isn't the correct community, please point me in the right direction.

VMWare Player shuts down after powering on virtual machine

I am using VMware Workstation 15 Player version 15.5.6 build-16341506. My operating system is Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. I have created an Ubuntu 18.04 VM inside my Workstation Player. When I power on the virtual machine, I see a new black window with "Waiting for connection" for a brief moment and then the window completely disappears and the Workstation Player shuts down. I am attaching the log file for reference. Furthermore, Intel VT-X is enabled from my BIOS and I have checked that multiple times. I dont understand what the issue might be here. Any help would be really appreciated.

Distorted audio playback with VM 15.5

Guest system Win XP ran for a long time with VM 4.0 under Win 7. After the conversion from Win 7 to Win 10, the guest system continued to run without problems.

Now I want to use the guest system Win XP on another Win 10 host. VM 4.0 can not be installed there. That's why I downloaded and installed VM 15.5. However, the guest system Win XP only works with heavily distorted sound reproduction.

Windows 10 2004 (May 2020 update) causes guest video flickers

$

Workstation Player version 15.5.6, build 16341506

Host OS: Windows 10 Pro, 1909

Guest OS: Windows 10 Pro, 1909

The guest VM was upgraded from 1909 to 2004 via Windows Update.

After the update, the guest video is erratic.

Programs like Chrome or Edge seem to work fine.

But if I access something that is part of the OS like the start menu, it pops up with a transparent background.  And then, the video rapidly flickers between the start menu and the underlying window (i.e. Chrome).  This also happens with any system window like Control Panel.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware tools in the guest OS.  No change.

Any ideas?

Slow File Transfer from Host to Linux VM

I have Workstation 15.5.6 Player installed and am trying to transfer files from host to Ubuntu VM.  I've used SCP, FTP, TFTP, etc all resulting in very slow transfers, approximately a max of 245 kbps.  Currently have the network setting in bridged mode and there are no problems with reachability.

Same ISO has no issues in Hyper-V.

Any help is appreciated.
