What is the best method of fixing a corrupted VMX file on Workstation 15.5
How to fix a corrupt vmx file
Cannot ping external hosts using IPv6 ip addresses but can ping using IPv4 ip addresses
Hello,
I have Workstation Player 15 installed on a host running Centos 8 and it has 1 vm running Centos 8 also. The VM has 2 virtual network adapters in auto-bridge mode and working. The strange problem I have is from within the vm I can only ping an external host like google.com using it's ipv4 address and not it's hostname (google.com) or it's ipv6 address. Tested it with several sites and noticed the same behavior.
As if that wasn't odd enough, nslookup resolves all external hostnames correctly!
Can someone please help me understand what's going on?
Thanks,
SR
Anybody getting crashes on an Ubuntu host
Hi,
I'm running VMware Workstation 15 Player (non-commercial edition) on an Ubuntu 20.04 host with LXDE as DE.
I run a Windows 10 x64 VM almost every day.
The VM frequently freezes on shutdown. I am able to manually kill the vmplayer process. This is an improvement on the behavior I was encountering in Ubuntu 18.04 (when I shut down the guest it often froze the system) but clearly still not the desired behavior.
Is anybody else running 20.04 experiencing the same behavior? And, if so, have you found a resolution or workaround?
Thank you.
newbee: Ubuntu (host) win10 (guest) dual boot setup on 15.5 VMWare player
Hello i am a newbee to VMWare and basically ended up here after finding the following (old?) document and wanting to setup a virtual machine with a win1o(guest) on a Ubuntu (pop!_20.04) dual boot sytem, but i am having some 'issues' getting started:
Configuring Dual- or Multiple-Boot Systems to Run with VMware Workstation.
I fugure this is old as it is about VMware workstation pro, i have installed VMware workstation 15.5 player, but i can make a wrong assumption here.
Never the les.. in the documents there are talking about ancient OS's and dont' mention the newer so i feel my assumption is probably granted.
the issue i am running up against is that there is a mention of picking custom setup, which i don't seem to have when creating my new VM.
anyone here aware of link / newer tutorial on this / similar topic i can read into. i tried to search but didn't find anyting, probably because i was searching wrong.
any help on the topic is appreciated.
Use partition as a Virtual Machine
Hi All,
I have a laptop with a dual boot Windows / MX Linux.
Laptop has 2 drives - a M2 1 TB and a 1TB SSD (2.5"). The M2 drive is the boot drive, with a grub bootloader. I selec Linux, or I can select the windows bootloader.
I want to be able to dual boot into MX Linux, and also access MX Linux without rebooting into it.
Someone in a Linux forum suggested I can create a VMWare 'virtual' machine using a physical drive.
The layout is: the 1 TB M2 drive has a 700 GB partition running windows, and a 300 GB (roughly) partition for Linux
I selected Use physical disk, then use partition. The partition wouldn't boot in VMware. Is there something I need to do? I think I read I need to umnount the partition first in Linux?
Is there an easier way to do this?
Thanks!
VMware Player, Win10: Command: Copy File to Shared Folder > System Cannot Find the Path Specified
I'm running VMware Player 15.5 in a Windows 10 VM on a Win10 VM host. I run this command:
copy "C:\Path Name\File Name.ext" Z:\VMShared
where VMshared is designated (and works) as a shared folder. I would incidentally prefer to give it a letter other than Z, but haven't yet figured out how, and am living with it as-is.
The command does not copy File Name.ext. Instead, it gives me an error: "The system cannot find the path specified." This isn't what I would expect. Windows Explorer within the VM reports, under This PC, the presence of "Shared Folders (\\vmware-host) (Z:)," and the VMShared folder under it.
The problem isn't on the source side of the command. This command works:
copy "C:\Path Name\File Name.ext" ..
BTW, how do you enter a command in Code font here?
Thanks ...
Why port forward to vmware player (debian 9 vm) don't work, but they work on the host system (win10 pro)
"It's a feature, it's not a bug!!"
CORRECTLY?!?
And that "feature" is to prevent the users to use it as a server, right...?
On the Debian 9 VM Port forwards don't work, neither Port 21 (FTP) nor Port 21 (SSH)... first i was thinking it's a problem with "FTP PASV" which requires special configurations with more than 1 port forward... but SSH never required more than 1 port forward, and it does also not work
BUT: When i create a port forward on the Win10 x64 Pro VM Host, it works without any problems.
So i'm nearly 100% sure that im right with "And that "feature" is to prevent the users to use it as a server, right...?"
So to say a built-in disadvantage to avoid the server usage. (What else...?!?)
Moving virtual image from intel based machine to AMD based machine
Hi there,
I have used VMware Workstation Player version 14 on a Windows7 Host machine. This machine hardware is Intel based, i7.
I have created a few virtual machines via Vmware on this Windows7 machine
I am planning to get a Desktop machine, but the hardware is going to be AMD CPU,, motherboard etc.
I still plan on using windows Operation System.
MY QUESTION is: Will my virtual machines that i created earlier on a machine that has Intel as its hardware base,
WILL I BE ABLE TO MIGRATE THEM, or say just run them on the new machine that is AMD based.
I tried to look up answers online, and most of the articles are from 2006-2010.
All of them say that you cannot.
Then i saw someone say that you can, but did not give details.
Hope someone that has experience with this situation can help out.
Regards,
P.
Problem moving from Player 14.1.5 to 15.5.6
I have Linux host and a Windows 10 guest. The Windows 10 guest has its hard drive encrypted with McAfee Drive Encryption. When the guest boots it displays a McAfee sign in screen at which the user enters their credentials, only after this is complete does Windows start to boot.
This all works correctly with Player 14.1.5. However, after I installed Player 15.5.6 I have a problem. The guest still starts and displays the McAfee sign in screen. The mouse works in the guest, i.e. I can postion the text cursor in the sign in box but the keyboard does not work so I cannot enter the credentials to start the guest. I would be grateful for any advice as to why the mouse works but the keyboard does not.
Thank you
Resized windows upon reawakening from sleep mode
I'm running Win7 32-bit in VM, host is Win7 64-bit, desktop spans 3 monitors. In "Unity"mode, when the host is reawakened from sleep mode, windows in the VM always come back randomly resized and sometimes can't be moved to one or another monitor (also random) without completely shutting down and restarting VM. Can VM be set to avoid this, or is this a bug?
Drag and Drop doesn't work in my Windows XP VM
I'm using Workstation Player 15.5.6 on a Windows 10 host, and I can't get Drag and Drop or the clipboard to work in a Windows XP guest.

VMware Workstation Player 15 and Windows 7 Pro
Installed VMware Workstation Player 15 on Windows 10 Pro. Installed Windows 7 Pro 32bit but I did not put in the product key yet.
When I go to the system icon in the Control Pane, Windows 7 says: 'Home Basic' instead of 'Pro'.
Please advise.

Original Halo CE black screen after intro videos on Windows 7 Workstation Player VM. Can anyone fix?
I have the original Halo: Combat Evolved CD, and I downloaded the game onto my Windows 7 Ultimate Edition VM. After doing so, I promptly tried to run it, and the game worked up until the intro videos ended and the game home started. I could hear the Halo theme playing, and everything else responded with no lag or anything, but the screen was completely black. I couldn't see anything, and when I fiddled with the controls, I even got the game to play its opening cutscene by accident, though it only played the audio. I exited the game and tried different things to get the game to work: I tried redownloading several versions of DirectX, editing the registry, and even the fix for this forum post dealing with the same issue-
among other things.
None of these worked, and for the highlighted fix by wila in the forum post I just linked, it caused my vm to not recognize any DirectX features. I have a relatively powerful computer, so I know that I meet the requirements to run it on my host PC, though it doesn't run due to incompatibility issues, I think. For the sake of troubleshooting, I will share my specs anyway:
CPU: i7-8700k 3.7GHz
GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
RAM: 16GB DDR4
Can anyone help me with this, please?
Win 10 2004 + Lynnfield processor compatibility
I'm currently using Player 12.5.9 on Windows 10 1909, using a Core I7 860 processor (Lynnfield).
Cannot update Player to later versions due to processor incompatibility (at least Westmere micro-architecture required on 13..15).
In the process of updating Windows 10 to 2004 version the installer asks me to uninstall Player.
Do you know if is possible to use Player v12.x on Windows 10 2004?
I don't want to finish the update and then find out that I can't reinstall Player.
Thanks in advance.

How much ram for best performances
Hi there,
I've just bought a new computer Dell Inspiron where I can install as much ram as I want.
I have 8 Gb so far and I was wondering what would be the right amount of ram to have the best performance.
I want to use ubuntu, mainly to do some programming with Visual Studio.
Would an extra 8 Gb be enough or should I go to a total of 24 Gb or 32 Gb to run it confortably ?
Thanks for your help.
